The Perfect $5 Fall Jacket

The last time I posted I mentioned going to the Goodwill outlet where I picked up a very fine crock. I also snagged this super cute fall jacket- don't you just love the red color and the gorgeous pattern in the lining? Because the Goodwill outlet is pay-by-the-pound, I am pretty sure I paid less than a dollar for this jacket (I bought ten items and paid $7 total...you will see more of those items in future posts!). The only problem was that it had two buttons missing!

I was going to be in the neighborhood of a fabric store today, so I brought the jacket with me so that I could match up some buttons and thread (and buy needles...how sad is it that I don't have needles??!). I found some buttons that weren't an exact match, but they were close enough that you wouldn't really notice a difference unless you were actually comparing buttons. I spent less than $5 on materials.

After a few minutes of handiwork (and only a few expletives), voila!

How cute am I? LOL! LOVE the color and LOVE the fitted look. I can't wait to wear this to the pumpkin patch next weekend. ;-) (by the way, a special thanks to my husband's grill and the timer on my camera for taking this lovely shot)

Have you picked up any great thrifty finds lately? Leave a comment and share!

Cuteness Alert!

Believe it or not, I was at DOLLAR TREE today and I found this way cute bag!! They had a bunch of them- for a DOLLAR! It has one main pocket and then two outer pockets (the patterned fabric). Okay, so I know it's not the greatest quality, but for a dollar- how can I resist?

They had several other very trendy colors and patterns available as well, so go check it out! I have no idea what I'll use this bag for, but it's slightly bigger than my purse, is just the right size for diapers and wipes (or a good book if I have the chance to go to a doctor's appointment alone). It's just a good size. I'm sure I'll find some use for it.

Just wanted to share! So cute!

Loving Your Local Library

Image from bestuff.com

There have been times in my life when I've been an avid library user and other times when I have lacked the library love! But ever since I've been a stay-at-home mom on a budget, I have really come to appreciate the vast array of services offered by my local county library system. Here are just a few of the perks I've come to love, and if you're on a "library hiatus" then I would recommend checking with your local library to see how many of these services they offer...

1. Online catalog and request service- This is the BEST for those of us who are time-crunched! Whenever I hear of a good book or I find an author I really like, I can just hop on the internet in my free time and see if the item I'm looking for is in the county system. Then, if it's there, I can request it with a click, and regardless of the library where it's located, I can name my preferred library for a pick-up location. The library calls me when it's in, and all I have to do is pop in, grab it off the hold shelf, check out and I'm done. No more dragging kids through the stacks to find what I want! (not quite as fun as perusing the shelves, but decidedly faster)

2. Online account services- I love that I can see what I have checked out online and renew items when I'm not going to have a chance to take them back to the library before they're due. It has definitely saved me a late fine or two!

3. Story Time- My kids love to go to the library for the weekly story times and other programs offered by the library. My local library offers different times for different age groups, and it has helped my kids develop their "sitting and listening" skills from a very early age. The childrens' librarians know them by name and are always happy to see them, which makes the library experience even more fun and special for my kids.

4. Unlimited books!!- Often with life on a budget one of the biggest struggles is constantly having to tell your children 'no.' I love taking my kids to the library because I can tell them 'yes!' My book limit is usually determined only by how many books they can carry and the number of books I think I can safely keep track of (cars and bedrooms seem to swallow books around here).

5. Multimedia Choices- It's easy to forget that a library is not just about books- these days, your local library can be your free movie rental store! Many libraries carry recent releases, and as long as you get them back in a week, they're as free as they come.
I also love to stop by the library before a long car trip to choose a good book on cd- I'm leaving on a trip next week and I got The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to listen to on the way to my destination. Trust me, it makes 6 hours in a car a LOT more bearable!
The library is another great place to get some fun kids' dvds. Each week my kids and I pick out a dvd (or two or three...) to watch. We've been able to enjoy a lot of shows that we aren't able to normally watch on tv.
One of my other favorite non-book choices to check out at the library are the wide selection of magazines. I especially enjoy the home decorating and craft magazines, because I can get some great inspiration from looking through them.

6. Fun contests and reading programs- Last summer my kids and I enrolled in the summer reading programs at our local library and we all won books! They also had fun mini-prizes that the kids could pick out each week from a "treasure box", which was a fun added bonus to our weekly library trips and it encouraged us to read together.

These are just a few perks for a library cardholder, but they are just the benefits I've appreciated most- the library experience is different for everyone, and everyone can find something to love about the library.

A few more tips:
- We've found that it helps to have a set library day every week. That way our book selection stays fresh and we're more likely to stay on top of returns and avoid late fees.
- Don't be afraid to contact the library to request materials that don't appear in their system. Libraries are paid for with your tax dollars- they answer to you, and they need your input to serve you better!
- Get to know your librarians. They are great resources for recommendations and information about library programs.
- If you have family members who don't come to the library with you on a regular basis (like Dad or an older child in school), pick up something for them while you're there- it's like a little treat to let them know you're thinking of them. I used to go to the library while my son was in preschool so I'd pick up a few books for them and leave them on his seat in the car. He loved the surprise!

Are you a library lover? Leave a comment and let me know what you love about your local library!

Not Really a Makeover, but: My Secret Room...

The crayon isn't a fixture. It's just for scale.

Welcome to my secret room. I decorated it myself using my home decorating magazines and my inner child. It was like going on an unlimited furniture and decor shopping spree. We had so much fun creating it. I got the idea from the Small Notebook, and I love that my room pops up from a file folder so I can fold it up when I'm not staring at it and daydreaming.

I have all my favorite things- a fireplace, a beautiful wreath, pretty pottery, and two perfectly-behaved (and of course non-shedding) loveable pets whom I named Goldie and Puff. They aren't all to scale (whose fireplace comes up to their waist?) but it's my room so I don't care. If my kids were a little bit older I would love to make rooms like this with them.

Please stop by again soon and we can sit by the fire and share a cup of tea. Goldie and Puff love to have company. Maybe one day you can even make your own secret room. If you do, be sure to let me know so I can drop in for a visit!

A Thrifty Treat: Bedtime Beauty

image from Livingifts

Sometimes as moms we are so busy taking care of everyone else that we forget to take a few moments to take care of ourselves. I don't know about you, but for me a long luxurious bubble bath is usually out of the question. However, I have found that this 2-minute bedtime ritual helps me feel pampered and pretty, and is an inexpensive little daily treat!

Often in the winter, the cold dry air will wreak havoc on my lips and my skin, so I keep a bottle of Freesia-scented lotion from Bath & Body Works and a tube of Overnight Lip Renewal by Sally Hansen (it was free after rebate at Rite Aid one month) in my nightstand drawer. Right before I get into bed each night, I put on the lip renewal and I massage the lotion into my hands. The scent soothes me to sleep, and when I wake up in the morning, I have wonderfully soft hands and smooth supple lips. You could use any kind of lotion that you like, and even a simple tube of chapstick can help your lips stay soft.

Take a few moments each night to pamper yourself. You're totally worth it!

Do you have any daily beauty rituals that help you feel pampered and pretty? Leave a comment and share!

Two Tools to Save You $$ This Christmas: Inbox Dollars and Entertainment Book

Black Friday is over and done with, but that doesn't mean there aren't still ways to save a bundle this holiday season! I thought I'd share two of my favorite money saving/money making tools with you. I would like to add that I never endorse anything on this blog that I have not tried or would not be willing to try, and if I say I've tried it- I'm telling the truth! And if I'm endorsing it, I really believe in it and I enthusiastically recommend it to my friends (like you!) whether you sign up for/buy it through my blog or not (though it's awfully nice when you do sign up through my blog ;-)).

The first thing I want to recommend is Inbox Dollars:

This is a company that I really like because there are so many ways to both earn money and save money. I signed up for Inbox Dollars earlier this year, and I have gotten one check from them. Basically, the way it works is that once you sign up, they start sending you e-mails with advertising in them. All you have to do is to click the link in the e-mail that says, "Click here to confirm reading this paid e-mail", and you receive a few cents for each e-mail you read. I'm always checking my e-mail throughout the day anyway, and it only takes a few seconds for each one, so I don't mind doing it and getting paid.

Every now and then you'll get an e-mail that will contain a special offer by a company, and if you take advantage of the offer and sign up with the company or purchase the product, Inbox Dollars will reward you with more cash. For example, I purchased some business cards through one of the e-mails I got, and only paid a few dollars for a few hundred business cards and got $4 through Inbox Dollars for doing it. So really, with the promotion, the cards cost me very little (I wish I could remember the exact numbers, but I can't). Right now there is a deal for Snapfish that is a good example of the type of thing I'm talking about- sign up and get $4 from Inbox Dollars plus 50 free prints. Not bad!

Another cool thing about Inbox Dollars is that if you do your online shopping through their site you can earn a percentage back on everything you spend. You can shop at all your usual spots- for me it's eBay, Amazon, Target, and Wal-Mart- but you get back anywhere from 1% to 15%, depending on the store.

The other two ways to save with Inbox Dollars are cash surveys ($0.50-$1 apiece) and cash games (I have never done those). I like the surveys because sometimes I have a few minutes to kill (on hold, watching tv, etc.) and you might as well make a little money while you're not otherwise occupied.

Like I said, I signed up earlier this year, and I reached the point where I could request a check- I think it was $30- and I had to pay a "processing fee" of $5, which wasn't a big deal because I was still getting $25. But it's just a nice way to "unconsciously" make a few extra bucks without a lot of work and hassle. And, as with most of these kinds of companies, you can increase your earnings by getting your friends to sign up.
If it sounds like something you'd be interested in, you can sign up here. It's free to sign up, and you can start making money and shopping right away. It works for me!

My second recommendation would have to be the Entertainment Book (this is a great deal they're offering now, by the way):

Save on all the things you love to do!

It's a coupon book, and the name of it is somewhat misleading because it has coupons for everything from restaurants to movies to all the major retail stores. This year is the second year in a row I've purchased one (last year was when I discovered it- through Inbox Dollars, actually!) and it has already paid for itself and I've only had it for a month.

Just for fun, I decided to make a brief list of some of the great places other than restaurants (because I think they have nearly every restaurant in here- from McDonald's to a Japanese Steakhouse) included in my Entertainment Book this year:

- Linens-n-Things
- Dick's Sporting Goods
- Shoe Carnival
- Wet Seal
- S&K
- Sharper Image
- Brookstone
- Radio Shack
- Barnes & Noble
- Florists of every kind
- Car & Truck rental
- Automotive services
- Zoo
- Symphony
- Movie Theater
- Bowling
- Theme Parks
- Hotels
- Lawn Care

And the list goes on and on! I don't know about you, but chances are I'll be going to at least two restaurants this year, and if the restaurant coupons are Buy One Entree, Get One Free (most of them are) then I've just paid for my book.

Another great feature of the Entertainment Book is that you get an online membership as well, which allows you to access additional savings through the website.

You can order the book today (order today and get Free Shipping!) and have it in time for some last-minute Christmas shopping, not to mention that they also make great gifts for your money-saving family and friends. Why pay full price for anything ever again?? ;-)

And of course, this post would not be complete without a brief reminder about Swag Bucks (I just love Swag Bucks!). To read more about my budding Swag Bucks success, click here. :-)

I wish you all the best bargain hunting this Christmas, and I encourage you to expand your money-saving minds and try something new. You never know- you might just hit a gold mine!

On the Second Day of Christmas...Beautiful Winter Flowers!

I don't know about all of you, but for a nature-lover such as myself, the cold days of winter can get REALLY depressing! Which is why last year I got very excited over this next thrifty gift- paperwhite narcissus bulbs! These are bulbs that will grow indoors in winter, and other than a little watering and some sunlight, they require very little care.

Last year I purchased a small bundle of these bulbs, then I went to Home Depot and bought some plain ceramic pots and potting soil (turns out you can also just use river rocks and water). I painted the pots to dress them up a bit, and then I planted the bulbs shortly before Christmas. By Christmas Day they were just sprouts a few inches tall. I wrapped a ribbon around each pot and gave them to my mom, stepmom, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law (and I kept one for myself). After about 2 more weeks they came into bloom, with lovely fragrant white flowers. Whenever I spoke with one of my "moms" or my sister-in-law, they would always mention their flower and tell me how it was doing, and we would compare notes.

I loved this gift because it was inexpensive, it was beautiful, it brought us all closer together with our shared "babies" we were caring for, and whenever I started to yearn for spring, I could just lean down and inhale the sweet fragrance of my beautiful flowers and know that the women I love in my family could do the same thing.

My only recommendation is to plant one or two extra, just because plants can be unpredictable and you don't want to be empty-handed for someone you love on Christmas (luckily, my sister-in-law is a certified horticulturist, so I gave her the plant that was struggling because I knew she could save it)! And that way, if they all bloom, you can have an extra to give to someone else or to keep for yourself.

For more information about paperwhites, check out this page on Gardenlady.com.

Ooh, I'm getting in the holiday spirit already...I can't wait for tomorrow's thrifty gift!

A Thrifty Gift: Books!

Here's a quick tip on a thrifty gift I love to give: books!

Now, books can be expensive, but not if you look for the right kind of book in the right kind of place. Whenever I'm at Goodwill or another thrift store, I keep on the lookout for the "Life's Little Lessons"-type gift books. They're small, they're cute, they have great quotations, and they're often only a dollar. Sometimes I will even use one of them in the place of a card- at a dollar, it can be just as cost efficient!

Recently, I was at an antiques/thrift store and I found the cutest little hardback book with a little prose in it about what it means to be a friend. It was shaped like a little novelette, and it was very antiquey-looking. The pages had the sweetest illustrations, and said things like, "A friend will sit with you when you are sad."

I bought the book for fifty cents, then I decided to save it as an anytime gift for my mom, since she is my best friend. The next time she came to visit, I tied a sheer white ribbon around it and left it on her bed in the guest room. She thought it was a really thoughtful little gift, and it was a nice way for me to let her know how happy I was that she was here, and that I think of her when she is not here.

So next time you're at a thrift store (and if you read this blog, I KNOW you go to thrift stores!) check out the book section and pull a few feel-good books for those you love. It's something that costs a little, but means a lot!

A Beautiful Thrifty Treat: Music to My Ears

One of the most fun, but most often overlooked challenges of living a beautiful thrifty life is allowing ourselves those little treats to enjoy. It's easy to spend our time trying to find grocery bargains and saving a buck on clothes, but sometimes you just need something that's fun and frugal just for you; that doesn't take a lot of time or money, but it gives you a chance to just indulge yourself for a moment.

My Beautiful Thrifty Treat for today is music. Sometimes I get that shopping bug where I just want to buy something, so I keep a list of songs I want to get for my iPod. Whenever I feel the need for a little pick-me-up, I'll spend $0.99 on a song I've been wanting. It costs less than a dollar, so it's not going to break my budget, and I get to look forward to listening to the song and adding it to my playlists. I am definitely a music lover, so 3 1/2 minutes of a great song is a real bargain for $0.99, in my opinion.

If you don't have an mp3 player, then just pull out an old cd with a great song you haven't heard in awhile. Take those 3 1/2 minutes and listen to it. You might be surprised at how the music can lift your whole mood!

Have a beautiful thrifty day!

What are some of your favorite pick-me-up songs?

Sweet Scents...very cheap!

I am a very sensory person, so for me, how my home smells is almost as important as how it looks. If it doesn't smell clean, then it doesn't feel clean! And with a dog, sometimes that can be tricky.

Lucky for me, there are always great deals on home fragrance products out there, and while I have been mostly relegating my coupon posts to my other blog, this is one I think that everyone can appreciate and use to make their life more beautiful! Not to mention it's really simple- the 8/03 SmartSource coupon insert (from your 8/03 Sunday newspaper) has a coupon for $4 off 1 Glade Plug-Ins Scented Oil Warmer. These are $4.94 at Wal-Mart, so with the coupon you can get one for $0.94! Not a bad deal in my opinion.

Mine smells just delightful...
